Program Description:
Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the clinical features, symptomatology, and neurodevelopmental aspects of adult ADHD and autism. In the evolving mental health landscape, the nuanced signs of ADHD and autism in adults frequently go unnoticed or misunderstood and, therefore, misdiagnosed. Historically, ADHD and autism have been primarily associated with childhood. However, the repercussions of these conditions stretch well into adulthood, especially when left untreated. This training session aims to equip clinical mental health professionals with the tools to identify, understand, differentiate, and support adults with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD and autism. By the end of this training, participants will possess a robust knowledge base about the signs and symptoms of untreated ADHD and autism in adults and the confidence to apply this knowledge in their clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Foundational Knowledge: Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the distinctions and overlaps between ADHD and autism, focusing on their appearance in adults.
- Neurodevelopmental Insights: Participants will explore the neurodevelopmental processes underpinning ADHD and autism in adults and gain insight into the impact of neurodivergent brains on behavior, cognition, and emotion.
- Diagnostic Challenges: Grasp why ADHD and autism often go undiagnosed in adulthood. Participants will comprehend the potential misdiagnoses, barriers to identification, and the importance of early detection.
- Life Impact: Understand the multifaceted impact of untreated ADHD and autism on an adult's personal, professional, and social realms. This will enable participants to better empathize and support affected individuals in various contexts.
- Strategies for Support: Participants will be equipped with evidence-based techniques and strategies to help adults navigate the challenges of ADHD and autism and walk away with actionable steps to enhance therapeutic interventions.
- Clinical Features: Dive deep into the hallmark signs and symptoms of untreated ADHD and autism in adults. This program will differentiate between the core symptoms from the more subtle, often overlooked indications.
- Cultural Considerations: This program emphasizes the importance of cultural competence in the assessment process. Participants will examine how cultural factors influence symptoms' expression, care access, and diagnostic techniques.
